This week, these creative 4th grade students collaborated to create a "Math Curse" inspired book. Students used Google Slides to write and illustrate a math problem. Then we sent off the file to Staples and now we have an actual book! On Tuesday we cut up strawberries to make sorbet. We discussed how Italian immigrants brought this delightful treat to America. Using measurement skills, we expanded the recipe x4 and observed a liquid change to a solid state. Based on their faces, I think that it was a well received lesson. On Thursday, it was a beautiful day, so we measured the back field and threw a tennis ball for my dog, Harper to calculate speed using feet per second. Finally, on Friday, we had our annual school wide Field Day! Students brought in white t-shirts and we decorated them with our favorite 4th grade concept (i.e. volcanoes, long division, immigration, movie-making and field trips). We all signed them and wore them as a unifying team uniform. We had such fun! As the year comes to a close, I have mixed feelings. I'm so happy to see how far these students have come and am excited for their future. But I am also sad to see the year end. These kids have been a joy to work with and I will miss them. However, something tells me the kids are excited for summer....

It has been an amazing week!
Happy May Day! Here is this week's newsletter!
What a hard working group of 4th graders and generous gift from the Lions Club! Thanks to Laurie Banas, the Hatfield Lions Club and the Fourth Grade Foresters USA! We planted 2 trees at HES to commemorate Arbor Day. Let's hope this becomes an annual event!
Thanks to Laurie Banas and the Hatfield Lions Club, the 4th grade will be coming home with small tree saplings in connection with the Fourth Grade Foresters USA project, just in time for Arbor Day, which is April 29th. Through this project, more than 677,280 fourth graders from across America since 2007, have planted a tree to help revitalize Arbor Day at School.
The trees your students bring home, will be identified as being sponsored by the Hatfield Lions Club and will be native to our area. To learn more about this project, check out http://www.fourthgradeforestersusa.com/what-we-do/ We will discuss Arbor Day during Social Studies on Friday, and plant a tree here at HES after a brief introduction about the project. Please let me know if you have any questions about this event. It is a wonderful opportunity for our students to join the 16,065 fourth grade students from Massachusetts who have already participated in this program since 2007! Have a great Arbor Day! This is an exciting week! We are exploring poetry, fractions and the concept of area and perimeter! Students are creating beautiful name banners using 1 cm graph paper and then calculating the perimeter and area of their names. We will determine who has the longest perimeter and the most area of all, by Friday! Here are a few samples. I think they are all terrific! We have also started a new game in our math class called Prodigy. Everyone seems excited to play this role play game where spells are cast, pets are adopted and wizards are defeated while solving math problems. Students brought home log in information so that they can access their accounts at home, too. It is exciting to see how motivated students are to play (and learn)!
Students have immersed themselves in the annual Iditarod Dog Sled Race, in small group work in the classroom, while researching online and through a Saturday family event. I am so proud of the work these Fantastic 4th Graders have accomplished! Take a peek at some of the images from the HES Family Fun event put on by our principal, Jen Chapin and the Title I staff, Sarah Shapiro and Heidi Poulin. It was a big hit and loads of fun! Next, check out the presentations our 4th grade gave today! Happy Pi Day and March Madness! Happy Friday, Parents! I hope to see you all at the Family Iditarod Event. This is a free family activity Saturday from 9:30 - 11:30 in the gym. Stop by to join in the fun, and see what an expert your 4th grader is on the Iditarod annual race! Next week the school is participating in March Madness! Each day, students will dress up according to a theme. The schedule is:
